This is our first summer with a yard and we are spending as much time outdoors as we can! We love to get outdoors, have picnics on the patio, and enjoy getting back to nature. My children both have autism and it’s important to incorporate gross motor skills, fine motor skills and sensory play into their days. While they were running, swinging and climbing on the play set, I put together this DIY sensory bin with Back to Nature Mac & Cheese for feeding their creativity.
I selected a few varieties of Back to Nature Mac & Cheese, which I found at Target, to add some fun shapes to this sensory bin. You will also need a container, sand shovels, and small toys to place into the macaroni. I chose a few cars because they are “safe toys” for my kids, as well as sea creatures to challenge them and inspire their imaginations.
First, pour Back to Nature Mac & Cheese into your container. Add half of your toys.
Pour the rest of your Back to Nature Mac & Cheese into the container. Then add the remaining toys to the sensory bin. These are my favorite types of projects – super easy for me, super fun for my kids, and full of possibilities for creativity!
C and Jo couldn’t wait to get into their sensory bin! C first used a sensory bin a few years ago during occupational therapy. It was challenging for him. While he still doesn’t like to directly touch the macaroni, he is comfortable using the toys and shovel to play with it. It’s fun for me to see how far he has come!
Jo, on the other hand, looks for any opportunity to try new sensory experiences. She is the first one to stick her hand in mud or run through a puddle! She had fun exploring the macaroni shapes, sea creatures, and cars.
We turned our DIY sensory bin fun into a summertime picnic! Since June was Get Outdoors Month and July 14th is Mac & Cheese Day, this is the perfect summertime activity!
C’s favorite food is macaroni & cheese. It gives me comfort to know that Back to Nature Mac & Cheese is non-GMO and made with no artificial flavors, preservatives, or synthetic colors. He likes that it is cheesy, creamy, and delicious!
