Family dinner is a fairly new concept in our household. C has been doing very well in his feeding therapy and he now sits at the table, sometimes even for a whole meal! His progress has inspired me to work harder at creating meals that he will like because there is actually a possibility that he will eat! He loves things with the flavor of tomato sauce. After a little brainstorming, we came up with a way for him to have the sensory experience of creating his food and the incentive of it being something he would enjoy. We decided to make Mini Sausage Calzones!
I like these Mini Sausage Calzones because there aren’t many ingredients, they are budget-friendly and easy to make, yet they’re on our list of #FamilyFavorites! Head to your local Walmart for a Heinz Classico Family Favorites sauce. Our favorite is Parmesan & Romano. Because Wisconsin. You will also need shredded mozzarella cheese, Italian sausage and crescent roll dough.
You will need to cook the Italian sausage before assembling your mini calzones. Grease a 9×13 pan while the sausage browns. C told me he had to park his cars on the rug while I was cooking. My little man is always at my feet!
Once your Italian sausage is browned, gather your other ingredients. You’re ready to get started! If you are getting the kids involved, you will want to prepare yourself for a mess. I put some wax paper on the table to keep the dough from sticking and allow for easy clean up.
C was in charge of sprinkling the mozzarella into each mini calzone and, I must say, he rocked it. Hubster was a diligent supervisor and calzone-wrapper. Baby Jo just wanted to eat everything!
After we added Heinz Classico Family Favorites sauce, Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese to each calzone, we wrapped them and placed them into our greased 9×13 pan. We cooked them according to the instructions on the crescent roll package. They came out piping hot and delicious! I like to serve them with extra sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy!
