Trekking from Wisconsin to Florida meant spending 40+ hours in the car. We anticipated it would be difficult for our two kids on the autism spectrum – and we were right! We stopped frequently to give them a chance to run, jump and stretch. It was also important to keep their hands busy while we were driving. The lovely husband and wife team at Happy Hands Toys, whose autistic son is the inspiration for their business, sent us exciting new fidget toys for our trip. The kids enjoyed having something new to play with, and all the buttons, puzzles, and putty kept them busy for a long time. Here are seven must-have fidgets for a family road trip that will keep the kids busy in the car – or anywhere you go!
My kids have been fascinated with zippers, buttons and latches for years. This zipper bracelet was a big hit – and they laughed as they took turns “handcuffing” one another!
Jo loved how this putty changed color in her hands while she played with it. I enjoyed the sensory input that it gave her!
I have never successfully completed a Rubik’s Cube. The pocket slider puzzle is similar, but the colors and sliding are so fun that my kids didn’t get frustrated by the puzzle aspect. Jo was focused on, “all the colors!” Conquering the puzzle would be a stellar challenge for older children.
How cute is this? I wanted to keep it for myself. My little gamer, C, had fun pretending he was controlling the vehicle as he played with this game controller.
Having a fidget available on my keys at all times will be helpful when one of my kids becomes anxious in public. Jo likes to push the key rings back and forth.
You may have heard of the fidget cube, but this mini keychain version is small enough to attach to your keys or slide into your purse for the perfect moment the kids need to keep busy. Bonus: Hubster and I enjoyed using it when we were stuck in traffic.
Squeeze this little bean pod and a little bean will peek out at you! C thought it was hilarious.
