When we purchased our first home last year, there were features we were super excited about (hello, attached two-car garage!) and others we were itching to replace (I’m looking at you, stained, smelly carpet!). The bedroom carpet was stained and reeked of wet dog. I imagine the prior owners let their dog out via the exterior door in the bedroom without putting rugs down to protect the carpet. I couldn’t wait to install new bedroom flooring! With the help of my in-laws, we were able to install new bedroom flooring in 24 hours for $200!
We purchased TrafficMASTER Lakeshore Pecan laminate flooring. Make sure you account for closet space when you calculate your square footage (confession: I didn’t!). Purchase an extra box to allow for any planks with damaged corners. Don’t forget to purchase carpet underlayment to put down beneath the laminate planks!
Removing the trim was relatively easy. Look out for trim nails so that you don’t poke yourself! You may want to make notes on the back of your trim boards to make it easier to match up after.
Ripping up the carpet went smoothly. I hid out in the other room with our kids to prevent them from breathing in any toxic dusts. My husband and in-laws rolled up the carpet pieces, then we used a Shop-Vac to vacuum carpet and padding fibers that remained.
We discovered some moldy areas on the subfloor. My theory must have been correct – the prior owners didn’t protect the entryway carpet from wet shoes or paws. I cleaned these areas with bleach water, then sealed them with Kilz primer and allowed it to dry overnight.
The next morning, we started measuring, cutting and assembling the laminate planks. The first row is the most challenging as you want to lay it straight. Once you get the first row started, things move along pretty quickly. The planks snap and click together. My husband measured the ends of the rows, and my father-in-law used a miter saw to cut the planks to size.
Less than 24 hours after we started, we were finished! Our new laminate floor is easy to clean, odor-free, and beautiful. This was our first time working with flooring and my in-laws’ help was invaluable! It would have taken us much longer to figure out for the first time on our own.
Three months have passed since we installed our new bedroom flooring. It has held up well and I still love the look. However, we have decided that we will not use this particular flooring throughout our home. It is quite slippery in some spots and, even with the thick padding that I chose, sounds a little hollow when we walk on it. We love it for our bedroom, though, and it was the perfect, budget-friendly solution to replace the nasty old carpet!
