One of the most important things that Hubster and I do for our relationship each year is schedule a summer vacation. With two small children and his long work hours, we have decided that we need to get away as a couple every year to reconnect. On our first wedding anniversary, we traveled to Bayfield, Wisconsin, for a few days and took the ferry to Madeline Island. We rented bicycles for half the day and mopeds for the other half. We hiked at Big Bay State Park. We fell in love. We vowed to come back for a vacation on Madeline Island.
The Willows is located 1.25 miles from town, close enough to walk and far enough to be nestled in the woods. A deer pranced through the yard as we grilled out on the deck. The birds sang and the leaves rustled in the breeze.
The walk to town takes you past a field of wildflowers.
Rent a moped from Motion to Go. You won’t be disappointed!
We buzzed around the island on our mopeds, stopping for a hike at Big Bay State Park. Pick a trail and soak in the view.
If you get thirsty, drive back to town and stop at Joni’s Beach. You may fill up your water bottle with fresh water flowing from a faucet. The waves crashed to the shore with the gusty wind, but it made for a fun adventure! Stay long enough and you will witness a beautiful sunset.
Be sure to visit the other park on the island, Big Bay Town Park. Take a stroll on the boardwalk, meander down the beach or rent a canoe and paddle along the water. Keep an eye out for ducks or birds!
We balanced adventure with down time at the cottage. One of my favorite moments was stepping out on the deck in the early morning. The sound of the wind gently rustling the leaves, birds singing and crickets chirping puts me completely at peace.
Which do you prefer on vacation – adventure or rest?
