I had a slight life crisis when I turned 30 last month. Thirty just seems like too much adulting, which doesn’t really make sense considering I’m a mother of two! It wasn’t all bad, though. Turning 30 also inspired me to examine what I am passionate about. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could turn our interests into more than just hobbies? If the things we love had a more prominent role in our daily lives, it would make each day more exciting. I enjoy taking something that looks old and unattractive and transforming it into something new and beautiful. I enjoy finding something that was cast aside and injecting it with a new purpose. DIY is one of my greatest passions in life, with coffee being a close second. Okay, it’s a tie. I love coffee.
Coffee is one of the anchors in my morning routine. My day feels incomplete without that morning cup of coffee! All new Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Vanilla from the coffee aisle at Walmart helps me start my day, and it’s what I enjoy as I work on new projects. I wanted to celebrate my love for coffee with a beautiful way to serve it. A local resale shop offers discarded home materials. I discovered this old cabinet door that looked tired and dreary but also had potential to be something awesome. I sanded off what was left of the former finish and wiped it down with a tack cloth. It took two coats of teal spray paint, with one hour to dry between coats. After the second coat of spray paint, my cabinet door dried overnight in the garage.
The next morning, I brewed a fragrant cup of Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Vanilla – seriously, I am obsessed with how amazing this coffee smells – and set out to finish my rustic serving tray. Since having children, I’ve discovered the importance of self-care. DIY serves as that me-time in my life, when I envision something and get my hands to work creating it. I took a hammer to the tray, creating dents and imperfections. Then I distressed it with vinegar and a rag. You can also choose to distress it with a sanding block. Give extra attention to corners and edges to create that worn-in, rustic feel.
I found these adorable feather handles and was waiting for the perfect project to use them. The white finish contrasted well with the teal and had the distressed, rustic look that I wanted. With a drill, I created new holes in the cabinet front and added the handles. I love that moment when a project comes together. It is no longer your vision, but a finished product that you created. Now the serving tray is ready to carry the perfect cup of coffee!
Where will you keep your serving tray? Ours found its home in the living room. It fits in with our home’s rustic decor. The serving tray sits on the coffee table, awaiting our next house guests…or the next time I call on it to help me enjoy my morning cup o’ joe in style. DIY and coffee? That is what I call self-care perfection. This new Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Vanilla helps me start each morning on the right note. It features natural flavors, no artificial flavors, and it is available at Walmart. I cannot wait to try the other three flavors: Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Chocolate, Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Cinnamon and Folgers Simply Gourmet Natural Caramel! Which flavor will you try? How do you like your coffee – black or with a little cream or sugar?
