When I was younger and pictured having kids, I imagined us baking together often. It was one of those activities that just popped into my head as the quintessential parenting moment with small children. Baking in the kitchen, joyful smiles on our faces, maybe even some uplifting music playing in the background. What can I say, my daydreams always have a soundtrack! As anyone with kids can attest, a daydream is precisely what that was. The reality of spending time baking with children is nothing like that fairytale! Reality is messier and requires a great deal of patience, but it still creates fun memories and experiences for your kids.
My children are on the autism spectrum and each one of them has unique sensory needs. My daughter digs into the nearest mess without hesitation, but does not like to have sticky hands. My son prefers to avoid a mess, but has started to venture into getting his hands dirty. He has learned that there is no mess that a little soap and water can’t fix! Between my children’s sensory challenges and my type A personality (patience and stepping back are not my strong suits!), we don’t often bake together. When I discovered the NEW Pillsbury™ Filled Pastry Bags, I had a light bulb moment. Less mess. One Pastry Bag per child. It sounded like fewer fights over the frosting and less of a mess for everyone involved! Basically, it sounded like an all-around parenting win. Let the sensory baking party begin!
You can find three delicious flavors of new Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bags at your local Meijer: Vanilla, Chocolate Fudge, and Cream Cheese. They have put our favorite Pillsbury Creamy Supreme frosting into a pre-filled Pastry Bag with a built-in star tip. You can produce beautiful baked goods without being a professional baker! Someday, I would love to take a cake decorating class to be able to make fancy desserts for my loved ones. Until then, I can easily create stars, rosettes and waves as I decorate with the Pastry Bag. Or, you know, my kids can frost their own fingers while exclaiming, “YUM! FROSTING!” Good thing I bought plenty at Meijer, where you can save $1 on any Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag with mPerks digital coupon! You can find them in the baking aisle.
The Pastry Bag is super easy to use. First, push the frosting toward the star tip and twist the top of the Pastry Bag. Next, remove the plastic cover from the star tip by tearing at the perforation. The perforated plastic cover was a lifesaver, because my kids tried to frost before I was ready! Once the plastic cover is removed, you can squeeze the top of the Pastry Bag to frost your brownie, cupcake, cake or cookie. I’m glad I purchased different flavors. I was right – with their own Pastry Bags, my kids didn’t fight over the frosting. They didn’t even fight over the baked goods! Happy children = happy mom. Our sensory baking party was a huge success.
What kinds of treats does your family enjoy making? Our kids love cupcakes and cookies. They are excited to decorate our seasonal baked goods together! Our fall baking will be much easier now. Perhaps we will even have a few moments like the ones in my daydreams. Now that I think about it, I better get to work on that soundtrack…
