5 Things Every C-Section Mama Needs

first family photo in hospital 2013

I didn’t anticipate having a c-section the first time around, so I wasn’t really prepared. I remember asking my mom to run out and pick me up the tallest granny panties she could find! After experiencing two c-sections now, I’ve discovered that there are five things that are essential to recovery.

I Made The Right Decisions

My second pregnancy brought about a lot of decisions that I needed to make. Considering my history of postpartum depression, emergency cesarean and hyperemesis, there were some difficult choices I had to make.

Taking Antidepressants as a Precaution
This time around, I was under the care of a psychiatrist. I wanted to seek out the advice of someone whose sole focus was psychotropic medication. After the horrific experience I had coming off of the last antidepressant, which was prescribed by the nurse practitioner in my former OBGYN clinic, I wasn’t going to take any chances.

Baby Deuce is Here!

I had a premonition that she would arrive before her scheduled date of May 6! We were hoping that she would stay in there until 38 weeks, and she did…by about an hour!

On Saturday, we decided to have a family day at the zoo and the park to celebrate C’s 2nd birthday (more on that this week!). Much to my surprise, I did not experience a single contraction with all of that walking we did. That was really unusual. So what happened later that night shocked me.

I’m Relieved About My Repeat C-Section

As I was sitting in C’s room waiting for him to fall asleep, it occurred to me that I am not at all nervous about having this baby. Flashback to two years ago – I was almost panicky thinking about my upcoming birth. I’m slightly shocked that I’m not concerned about this one. My birth with C was quite traumatic and resulted in an emergency c-section. I expected to be a bundle of nerves for any future birth experience.

To Tie or Not To Tie? A Question of Tubal Ligation

“Are we just doing the c-section or are we tying your tubes as well?” My OB looked at me with eyebrows raised, waiting for an answer.

“No, just the c-section,” was my baffled reply. I hadn’t even considered that as an option. At that point, I was only 28-ish weeks. I’ve had nearly 10 weeks to think about this and I still don’t know what I want to do.

An Emergency Cesarean and the Scars That Remain

After C was born, it didn’t cross my mind right away that I had experienced a traumatic delivery.  I think I was in shock from it all, and just relieved that it was over.  While I generally don’t think about his birth and the events that led to my emergency cesarean, there are certain triggers that bring it up for me.

I Did It! My Pre-Pregnancy Jeans Fit!

When I look at this, I'm happy it *only* took me 6 months! ;)

Yes, I realize it has been six months since my son was delivered via c-section.  I never thought it would take this long or be this much work to get back into my pre-pregnancy jeans.  It’s been a bit disheartening seeing other moms get back to their pre-pregnancy size, or even smaller, months before I have.  But, it’s time to put all that behind me because it’s my time now – I DID IT!  Today I was able to button my pre-pregnancy jeans!!!

My Son Killed My Mid-Section

I was excited to notice how loose the jeans are that I’ve been wearing since having C.  So, I thought I’d test my luck and try on all of my old jeans.  Um…yeah, that was a bad idea.

My pre-C jeans fit perfectly everywhere except the waist.  C killed my mid-section!  Ugh.  It’s terrible.  I need to lose probably another 2-3 inches on my waist before I can fit into those old jeans.  Somehow I’ve managed to shrink my thighs and butt back to their pre-C level, but that ol’ waist is hanging tough.  C stretched it to the max and I hope it’ll someday shrink back up.

The Postpartum Clothing Void

I was really hoping that by now I’d be able to comfortably fit into my pre-pregnancy pants.  I can button them!  I just can’t breathe.

I’ve been working out once/day (sometimes twice!) for the past few weeks and have lost inches…but not enough off of my waist.

Postpartum Body

Ugh…I didn’t want it to get warm so quickly.  I don’t have anything to wear!

I’m in this “in-between” phase for clothing options and it is not fun!  I have a pair of maternity jeans from early in my pregnancy that I’ve been wearing, but they tend to fall down easily since I don’t have the belly to hold them up.  I have sweatpants.  Other than that…I need to lose another 2-3 inches in my waist before I can comfortably button my pre-pregnancy pants.  Boo!!

Birth Plans

All of the pregnancy books tell you to come up with a birth plan so that you know exactly what you want to do when the time comes.

I’ll admit, the thought of a birth plan was a little daunting to me.  This was my first pregnancy and I had no idea what to expect from a labor and delivery experience.  I was afraid to plan it all out because that meant I had to really think about it ahead of time.  My doctor asked me about it during one of my late third trimester appointments.  When I said I didn’t really have one, but I knew I wanted an epidural, she just chuckled and said it was probably a good thing.  The people who come in with a three-page birth plan, for example, are often disappointed because things never seem to go exactly as planned.

Post-Cesarean Weight Loss

One of the things that devastated me the most about needing a c-section was the length of recovery.  I was so looking forward to starting to work out sooner and losing the baby weight, plus some weight that I had been working off before I found out I was pregnant.  I’m still eagerly anticipating getting back into my Tae-Bo, pilates and Jillian Michaels’ 30-Day Shred workouts.

The Rise and Fall of Superwoman

I totally felt like Superwoman yesterday.  Today…not so much.  Now I understand what people mean about the highs and lows of caring for a newborn.  Early this morning, I came down with either the flu or some kind of food poisoning, so I’m not at my best today to begin with.  I have to admit, heaving less than two weeks after a c-section is quite painful.  :-/

A Delivery Story

Our son has arrived!  Labor and delivery definitely didn’t turn out as I had expected or hoped for.  The recovery process is going to be way longer than I wanted, but our beautiful baby boy is here and he’s perfect in every way.  I can’t believe how cute he is.  And it’s crazy to think that we MADE him. ;)
