It’s been about two weeks now since we started C on a blenderized diet of whole foods through his g-tube. He had previously been on 3.5 cans of Pediasure each day, which meant he was getting 63 grams of sugar poured directly into his body daily. That didn’t sit well with me for multiple reasons and now that he wasn’t in a dangerous place with his body weight, we made the decision to take control of his diet.
We’re using a BlendTec blender and I really can’t say enough good things about it! It’s been a game changer for us. It’s so powerful that it’s almost scary! What do we put through his tube? Pretty much anything! Here are some examples of his meals:
- spinach and blueberries
- peanut butter, banana and oats
- peach Kefir and carrots
- avocado and chicken
- whole milk yogurt and oranges
We try to mix in good fats, whether that be coconut oil, olive oil or avocado. I’m buying as much organic produce as our budget allows, as my goal is to eliminate as many chemicals from his diet as possible. I put probiotics in one of his blends each day; and we just ordered some protein powder and almond butter to try.
It can be difficult to only make 8 ounces at a time (that’s the volume of feed that he receives), so I usually make 2-3 servings at a time and refrigerate those in reusable containers. I think we’ll eventually come up with a system for freezing feeds as well.
C is responding very well to real food! Who would’ve thought? Oh yeah, me. 😉 In just two weeks, I’ve noticed that his hair is thicker than it’s ever been, his nails are growing faster and he’s not experiencing the obvious blood sugar crashes he had before. We’re still dealing with sleeping issues; however, I believe he is sleeping more comfortably than before. He still wakes up, but he doesn’t cry and scream when he does. It’s pretty cute actually – he takes the time to collect his water bottle and the 2-3 cars he picked to sleep with that night, then walks quietly into my room and hands each of them to me before I pick him up. 🙂
I’m thrilled with this change that we’ve made for him! Instead of just growing, I think we’re going to start seeing him thrive.
