It is a busy time of the year, trying to squeeze in memory-making summer activities while shopping for back to school and preparing for that new schedule. Our two children have autism and changes to their daily routine present a challenge. They will both be starting new schools this year – Jo for the first time! – and are anxious about all that is new. To help alleviate their anxiety and provide some comfort for them in what to expect, I created a back to school social story. We are establishing a new daily routine while reading their stories and preparing them for what is to come.
Our new routine involves an afternoon snack and some light reading. Right now, we’re reading this back to school social story. Once school starts, they will already be in the routine of an afternoon snack and immediately tackling homework! I found Horizon® yogurt in the dairy section of my local Walmart. It’s a snack that I can feel good about giving to my kids. Each six-ounce cup offers live and active cultures in five delicious flavors. My kids can scoop it straight out of the cup or I can incorporate it into another recipe that they might enjoy.
Creating healthy habits and establishing a routine will help ease my kids’ transition when their schedules change. We regularly utilize social stories for our children with autism, but they can benefit any child who is experiencing anxiety about going back to school!
A social story may help kids understand what to expect and feel more comfortable when situations arise in their new environment. If you’d like to see the back to school social story that I created for my kids, click here or on the image above to download your own free printable version!
For our family, routines are a way to incorporate unchanging moments for our kids to fall back on when they experience higher levels of anxiety. Going back to school is a big change! How does your family prepare for the back to school season? Are there certain traditions, snacks, or routines that you look forward to?
