The second half of summer seems to pass twice as quickly. In less than a month, I will have two school-aged children! I always say this, but it will always be true – the days are long but the years are short. Our mornings will inevitably consist of a flurry of activity, two reluctant children, and forgetting something as we rush out the door. To avoid forgetting something important, I am already thinking of ways to streamline the morning routine. I ordered these top-rack dishwasher-safe bento boxes from Amazon, which I will use to create easy, make-ahead school lunches for the kids.
I am not a morning person – and neither is the rest of my family. On school mornings, I don’t want to worry about making two nutritious lunches that my kids will actually eat while I stumble my way to the coffee pot. These bento boxes will keep the kids’ food from blending into each other. Crackers will stay fresh. Fruit won’t touch meat. These are essentials for picky eaters!
My kids are difficult to pack cold lunches for, because they have sensory challenges with food. Creativity will be key to our lunchtime success this year! I will introduce new foods while providing enough of their safe foods that they can still be comfortable and fill up. Festival Foods is my go-to store for grocery shopping. The produce is always super fresh, there is a large variety of items to choose from, and if I’m running short on time then I can grab something from the deli.
This school lunch offers red grapes, Annie’s chocolate bunnies, carrots, and Poppyseed Chicken Salad from the Festival Foods deli. I might even make one of these for myself!
Apple slices and cheese cubes are the main part of this school lunch. The kids can create cheese sandwiches with the pretzels, and enjoy fruit snacks for dessert.
Our kids are hesitant to try meat, but they love cheese. I separated cubed cheese and ham with muffin cups, so the kids can try something new without anxiety about it being the main event! Blueberries and Goldfish crackers round out this lunch.
