When I heard about Heifer International’s School Milk Feeding Program, it touched my heart. Our son essentially stopped eating when he was a toddler. He received a feeding tube due to malnourishment, but we didn’t discover the physical causes of his feeding problems until later. As a mother, it was a terrifying period of time as I watched my child lose weight and become lethargic before being reintroduced to calories and nutrition. As scary as our experience was, I cannot imagine how terrifying it must be for families who see their children suffer without access to the nourishment they need.
Look at these beautiful faces. These smiling children are recipients of Heifer International’s School Milk Feeding Program in Tanzania, which is the full circle implementation of the organization’s community efforts. It is the cow to the classroom! A family is provided a cow and training from Heifer International. Here is more information about Heifer International’s cows:
The family uses the income from that cow to meet their immediate needs first, then many of them go on to join a cooperative of dairy farmers to sell their excess milk. That milk is processed, packaged and sent to schools where it will reach thousands of children in four regions!
Do you find it difficult to focus on your work when you’re hungry? **See below for a delicious midafternoon snack!*** The nutrition the kids receive from milk positively affects their health and their education. This program empowers kids to focus on their education instead of their hunger. It is saving lives and providing futures! A cow really can change everything.
The ultimate goal of the School Milk Feeding Program is to provide 9,000 children, ages 9 and under, in the Njombe, Iringa, Mbeya, and Songwe regions with a packet (200ml) of free, fresh milk each weekday throughout the school year.
Empower kids and communities with Heifer International by making a donation of any size! Just $75 can provide one student with fresh milk for an entire school year! Click here to find out more and to donate to this worthy cause.
If you are unable to donate, share this post on Facebook or click here to retweet my Twitter post! Women Online will donate $1 (up to $2,000) for each share – let’s get milk to as many kids as possible!
So, you were nodding with me when I asked if it was difficult to focus while hungry? Try curbing that mid-afternoon energy slump with this Cherry Chocolate Chip Smoothie! A handful of cherries, a cup of milk, and a few chocolate chips is all you will need. Our family’s hope is that you will think of the School Milk Feeding Program while you enjoy this afternoon smoothie. Cheers!
